One of several types of puppet used in Javanese puppet theatre, the more famous being the flat, leather Wayang kulit — the shadow puppets. The theatre performances, popular with the young and old alike, may include works from the Hindu epic the Ramayana, local traditional tales, and political commentary. Similar puppet theatre forms are known historically throughout Southeast Asia.
