Ivory Storyknife

A storyknife is the English translation for the Yupik word yaaruin. Traditionally, young Yu’pik girls would use yaaruin, made from wood, bone, antler or ivory to carve stories in snow or mud. Franz Boas, often called the father of American anthropology, visited several of the villages I visited in the 1980’s, and I found they were still using the same images in 1980.
