LATE 19th CENTURY HAND FAN

This lovely fan is made of white satin and hand painted with flowers and a landscape scene. It is trimmed with fluffy maribou (stork) feathers and has pierced bone sticks. It is quite large, measuring 24 inches wide and 14 inches tall. Fans were not only used for cooling, but for flirting as well. The way in which a fan was held could indicate to a gentleman whether his attentions were welcomed.
