This unique Nativity scene is a traditional Turkish carpet woven from 100 percent wool yarn using double hand knots, on a small wooden loom (13 inches tall). Nativity scenes from Turkey are very rare because the country is 99.8% Muslim. This piece is designed and originally made by Mustafa Yigit, who is Muslim. Mustafa began making his Nativities in 2000, after one of his American friends explained the Nativity story to him and commissioned a scene. He is the only person in Turkey to make carpet ones, and now he has taught five villagers in central Turkey to weave them.
