Hand-formed terracotta. Purchased in the Basque region of Spain near Santiago de Compostela, 1989. The Holy Family has been placed in an hórreo; 9 inches tall.
An hórreo is a traditional structure used to store grain found in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, mainly in the province of Galicia in Spain, but also in Asturias and Northern Portugal. Built of wood or stone, they are raised from the ground by pillars, to deter rodents and moisture.
