When Buddhist Chinese and Vietnamese die, they burn cardboard replicas of items needed in this life to be utilized in the next life. These items are called joss. Believers say that the smoke from those necessities will carry their essence to the heavens. And of course, they can’t be caught dead without their credit cards.
