The Krampus is a horned figure and companion of St. Nicholas and who punishes children who have misbehaved during the previous year. During a so-called Krampuslauf (Krampus run) young men dress as Krampus and frighten onlookers. Figures made of fruit and nuts are found among various vendors and are taken home as a reminder to the children to behave. The custom is found primarily in the Alpine region
