Made of dried banana leaves and other natural materials, purchased in Dullstroom, South Africa, 2016. The figures are made from bent wire with wood bases, which are then wrapped with fibers from the banana plant. The storage box forms the stable (8 inches tall). One of the kings swings an incense burner. One shepherd plays a flute, and another a lute. The unknown artist was able to capture the postures and gestures with such accuracy that these figures look like they could move when we look away.
Banana fiber is a versatile and strong material. A surprising level of detail is attained by the clever use of varying shades and textures of the fibers. Fibers dried in full sun are black whilst those in the shade are a light hue; all other tones are a combination of sun and shade.
